This has been the busiest week of my independent career so far. So much so that I will write a bit less about each project so it doesn’t take me all day! So let’s get to it, y’all!
Android Faithful #44 - Inside Google at I/O: Gemini, AI and Android 15
In what has become a cherished tradition, Google invited us to talk with Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystems, and Dave Burke, VP of Engineering, on Android Faithful. They are always gracious with their time and a heck of a lot of fun to talk to and their excitement is palpable. I was running the tech for the interview so you won’t see me in the interview this year.
We talked about Gemini Nano, how on-device AI is stopping scam calls, and ChromeOS virtualized on Android. Every time we get the opportunity to do this feels like further confirmation that we are on the right track with the show. Looking forward to the next opportunity!

AI Inside #17 - Google Gemini and the Wall of Noise
I knew with this AI-heavy week that we needed an AI-heavy-hitter and Mike Elgan was exactly the right person to join Jeff Jarvis and I! He writes all about AI in his Substack, Machine Society, and has always had a lot of very potent opinions about where all of this is headed. We discussed the news from Google IO in detail and also spent time talking through the OpenAI GPT-4o event and Kevin Roose getting a bit too chummy with chatbots once again.

Techsploder: Google IO… More Like Google AI
We finished recording AI Inside and I looked at my wall of notes from the event and thought “dang, I hardly talked about all the stuff from the event!” So I fired off a record and just… rambled. And I’m really happy I did. It was a fun walk through the event in deeper detail and I proved to myself that I can take the work I had done for other shows that didn’t get used and find a use for it. EFFICIENCY! I’m learning with every video, yall.

Techsploder Podcast #3 - Alex Kantrowitz
Episode 3 of the Techsploder Podcast had me chat with Alex Kantrowitz who you’ve almost certainly seen if you followed the work of the Buzzfeed Newsroom prior to the pandemic (where they produced impressive news output, an interesting counterpoint to their listicle meme-ish roots.) Alex now has his own media empire with Big Technology, he’s interviewed the heaviest of hitters like Mark Zuckerberg (four times) and Jack Dorsey. And he worked in politics early in his career which saw him working for Anthony Weiner before… ahem… the thing happened. Alex is someone I admire in going solo and I learned a lot in talking with him about his story to the top.

Tech News Weekly #337 - AI News From Google I/O & OpenAI
I got that wonderful ping from Mikah Sargent to see if I wanted to join him on Tech News Weekly to discuss my time at Google IO and of course, I had to say yes! We covered most of the major news items and he even challenged me to talk about BIG news from IO that had nothing to do with AI. Let me tell you, that was a difficult challenge.

Daily Tech News Show #4771 - AI is Really a Tool, Not My Friend
I love getting the invite to hop on the Daily Tech News Show and this week, I was asked to compare the Google AI news against OpenAI’s GTP-4o announcement event from the day prior. I caught up with Sarah Lane, Robb Dunewood, Roger Chang, and Joe! We also discussed the new Venu sports streaming service and the pending arrival of a TweetDeck-like interface to Threads!

Fast Company Article: Could Google’s AI push cause a rift with YouTube creators?
I had a few run-ins with Janko Roettgers during Google IO and some excellent conversation about being independent and artificial intelligence swallowing the world. Then he tapped me on the shoulder to ask if I would want to be interviewed from the creator’s perspective for a piece he was writing about the potential impact of AI summaries within the YouTube ecosystem on YouTubers who rely on ad revenue from views. I had many thoughts and was honored to have the tables turned on me for a change! Read the article, excellent work by Janko as always.

Jason Howell's Office Hours will shock you, and what happens next will make you laugh! And it's free
As if I hadn’t already done enough this week, I decided very last minute to open up a stream for, you know, 30 minutes (and it ended up being 80 minutes!) to talk about, well, whatever people who showed up in the chat wanted me to talk about! Perhaps “Office Hours” is a poor title for these conversations, but really it’s an opportunity for me to ramble on the many challenges and hurdles I face in my entrepreneurial journey. It was a ton of fun. Oh, and don’t take the title of this episode too seriously. I really hope everyone realized that I was poking fun!
I’m exhausted
OK really, I got nothing more. Although I will say I got a mysterious box in the mail and thought “ooooh I bet this is something good.” So I set all my gear up, darkened the room, hit record on my 4K overhead camera, and unboxed…. my business checks that I ordered a few weeks ago.
Well, they can’t all be winners.
See you next week!
