Hello to my new and wonderful Substack community!
First of all, I have to share that I am over the moon at the outpouring of support I’ve received this past week. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I appreciate the words of encouragement, the comments of acknowledgment, and the excitement that many of you have shared with me since announcing last week that I would be taking a trip into the unknown after my layoff from TWiT. I’ve also had an unexpected stream of people come to me with ideas and potential opportunities. I’ve never been in this position before, and it FEELS REALLY GOOD. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
I don’t know if this is the sort of thing most Substackers keep close to the vest, but I just passed 1,000 subscribers here and I feel like that is a tremendous achievement in such a short amount of time! It shows me that you care to know what’s up in my world, and I’m floored! I also recognize that along with that number comes the responsibility to give you what you signed up for. So, TO THAT END…
Last night, I was invited to sync up with the Android Faithful crew to talk All About Android (the news, the hardware, the apps), and boy, what a week for Android news. (Watch, Listen/Subscribe, Patreon)
We discussed the Beeper Mini/iMessage on Android saga, Google’s MAJOR loss in the Epic antitrust case, and how Google is integrating its highly regarded Gemini AI model into Bard and the Pixel 8 Pro and what that means for future updates of its Pixel hardware.
We also discussed a little thing right near the top of the show: I’m officially joining the Android Faithful crew as a weekly host!
OK, so perhaps not the most Earth-shattering news in the world. I’m certain plenty of you called this one from a mile away. But ever since All About Android was canceled last Summer, I’ve continued to get a healthy stream of nudges from fans who thought I should be a guest on Android Faithful more often. Not only that, I’ve missed my weekly hang sesh with some great friends every Tuesday evening. All About Android was a show about Android, of course, but it was also kind of like a social hour (and a half). Not having that hang time left a hole in my heart. I missed the gang. And I missed the opportunity to share that fun with you.
Suffice it to say, I am thrilled to be back. It might take me a few weeks to get back on the Android minutiae train because I’ll be honest, I haven’t been following the second-tier Android news stories as closely since the closing of AAA, but it won’t take me long. And now, Ron Richards will have an opportunity to miss an episode and catch his breath as he’s been doing so much of the production work behind the scenes on AF since the launch.
Thanks to Ron Richards, Huyen Tue Dao, and Mishaal Rahman for inviting me into the fold. It truly feels like coming home. I’m so excited!
More to come, everyone! Thanks for your incredible support. It means the world to me.
Jason
So glad to see you back on Jason! Show was great and I have to say, I'm new to AF but a life-long Android user.
Congrats Jason! It was great to see you with the AF gang this week.
