We are officially away on our family vacation, first stop: Washington DC! We’ve seen a whole lot of essential sightseeing, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Museum of Natural History, the SPY Museum, the Vietnam Memorial, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture (which was absolutely mind-blowing.) Tomorrow afternoon, we board a plane on our way to Italy! But in the meantime, MORE SHOWS hitting the feeds!
AI Inside #21 - The Future of Voice Interaction
I first began following Justin Uberti’s work and musings when he worked for Google. If memory serves, I came across him on Google+ (RIP) and followed his groundbreaking work from there: He created the WebRTC (Real Time Communication) standard which paved the way for major advances in web-based video communication like Hangouts Video, Duo, Stadia, and more. After joining Clubhouse for a stint, he founded Fixie.ai, which allows for the creation of applications using LLM technology.
His creation of AI.town is a great showcase of the conversion of his efforts over the past decade, with a focus on conversational AI. Jeff Jarvis and I talked with Justin about the evolution and rapid development of AI voice systems. We also pick apart whether these systems should aim to replicate human conversational standards or carve a place that’s all its own. It was great getting the chance to talk on a high level with someone I’ve followed for years.

Techsploder Podcast #7 - Dick DeBartolo
I wasn’t much of a comic book kid, but there was one comic I appreciated when I was younger: MAD MAGAZINE. Later in life, I would find myself producing the Giz Wiz podcast for Dick DeBartolo. My childhood self would never have believed it if I told him.
Dick is a truly unique, one-of-a-kind, media legend. His history is rich and fascinating, having spent time producing one of the most popular game shows of the ’60s and ’70s, reviewing “low-tech” gadgets on national TV (Regis, Good Morning America, World News Now, and more), and of course his record-breaking run and influence at the legendary MAD MAGAZINE. Dick shared some incredible stories with me in this conversation, and I was delighted to get the chance to talk so casually about how his life has been impacted by his love of tech.
